Eddie Smith flees his home county where he has failed romantically and vocationally. He lands in Santa Monica where he finds himself thrown into a sexual, occupational and political whirlpool. Women, employers and political bosses come and go. Carried along on a stream of erotic, financial and political intrigues, he feels he has little choice but to go wherever the riptide of fate takes him.
